The function of the positioners is to guarantee that the valve position is assigned to the input signal in a predetermined manner. The controlled variable, x, is the valve position, while the reference variable, w, is the input signal. The positioners compare the input signal received from the control system with the travel of the control valve and generate an appropriate output signal pressure, pst, which is the output variable, y.
For double-acting actuators, a reversing amplifier is used to create two opposing signal pressures. This amplifier takes the output signal pressure pst from the positioners as an input, and then produces a pair of signal pressures, which work to move the actuator in opposite directions. This doubles the actuator's effective range, allowing it to open or close the valve completely.
The product can be mounted in any position and is suitable for both normal and split-range operation. It boasts an excellent dynamic response and negligibly small influence of supply air. The proportional band (P band) is adjustable as well as the air output capacity. It has low air supply consumption and is very insensitive to mechanical vibrations. Additionally, it has a low-maintenance compact design.
For hazardous areas, there are versions available with intrinsic safety II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 or II 3G Ex nA II T6 for Zone 2.
The product is also available with a type of protection called "Flameproof enclosure" Ex d with Type 3766 Positioner and Type 6116 i/p Converter (see Fig. 2). It can be directly attached to a Type 3277 Actuator (see Fig. 3) or attached to actuators according to IEC 60534-6. It can also be attached to rotary actuators according to VDI/VDE 3845.

Positioners are devices that are attached to pneumatic control valves to ensure their proper functioning. They help in positioning the valve plug accurately, which is essential for smooth control of the fluid flow.
Single-acting and double-acting positioners are two types of positioners that are commonly used. Single-acting positioners use air pressure to move the valve in one direction, while a spring moves it in the opposite direction. On the other hand, double-acting positioners use air pressure to move the valve in both directions.
Both types of positioners have their advantages and disadvantages. Single-acting positioners are relatively simpler and can be more cost-effective than double-acting positioners. Additionally, they consume less air and require less maintenance. However, they may not be suitable for certain applications that require precision control.
Double-acting positioners, on the other hand, offer greater precision and control. They are better suited for applications that require accurate control over the fluid flow. However, they may be more expensive and can consume more air than single-acting positioners. They may also require more maintenance.
Overall, the choice between single-acting or double-acting positioners depends on the specific requirements of the application. It is important to consider factors such as precision, cost, and maintenance requirements before selecting the appropriate positioner for a control valve.
